Nel 2019 Mirka Farabegoli e José Witteveen sono state ospitate per due settimane nella residenza artistica di amaneï per sviluppare una ricerca sull'isola di Salina, finalizzata alla conoscenza del luogo e dei suoi abitanti. Ad aprile 2021, la Farabegoli e la Witteveen ritornano ad Amaneï per una seconda residenza. Questa volta accompagnati da Joost Omen. Come scrittore, Joost si avventura occasionalmente nel regno delle arti visive e per questo svolge un ruolo fondamentale nell'interpretazione delle varie storie che sono state raccontate nella passata residenza e di quelle raccolte durante la seconda fase. Il progetto Betwixt si focalizza su aneddoti personali, frammentati e parzialmente avvolti nel mistero. Le artiste hanno preso conoscenza delle prove e delle fatiche che gli abitanti dell'isola hanno dovuto affrontare; come le conseguenze delle famiglie dilaniate dalla necessità di migrare all'estero in cerca di mezzi di sussistenza o l'impatto del turismo sulla comunità un tempo molto unita. Consapevoli del loro ruolo di outsider, accettarono il fatto che la loro interpretazione sarebbe stata soggettiva e in parte influenzata dalla loro stessa intuizione. Tutti e tre gli artisti sono interessati alla tensione tra passato e presente e al ruolo dei rituali in senso lato. Gli umani sono animali rituali; trovano conforto nella creazione di azioni ripetitive per affrontare il caos della vita quotidiana. Queste azioni non sono necessariamente grandi gesti; si trovano nelle piccole attività che all'inizio possono sembrare anche banali.

In 2019, Mirka Farabegoli and José Witteveen were hosted for two weeks at the Amaneï artist residency to carry out a research project on the island of Salina, aimed at understanding the place and its inhabitants. In April 2021, Farabegoli and Witteveen returned to Amaneï for a second residency, this time accompanied by Joost Omen. As a writer, Joost occasionally ventures into the realm of visual arts and plays a key role in interpreting the various stories told during the first residency and those gathered in the second phase. The Betwixt project focuses on personal anecdotes, fragmented and partially shrouded in mystery. The artists became aware of the trials and struggles faced by the island’s inhabitants, such as the consequences of families torn apart by the need to migrate abroad in search of a livelihood or the impact of tourism on a community that was once very close-knit. Aware of their role as outsiders, they accepted that their interpretation would be subjective and partially influenced by their own intuition. All three artists are interested in the tension between past and present and the role of rituals in a broad sense. Humans are ritualistic animals; they find comfort in creating repetitive actions to cope with the chaos of daily life. These actions are not necessarily grand gestures; they are found in small activities that at first may seem trivial.
